Virginia Tech Jumps to #13 after Destruction of North Carolina

Andrew Motuapuaka 1
After thrashing North Carolina 59-7 this past weekend, the Virginia Tech Hokies moved up to #13 in this week’s AP and Coaches Polls. The Hokies entered the weekend ranked 14 and were excellent in all parts of the game, scoring two defensive touchdowns and one on special teams. Virginia Tech will host Duke in Lane Stadium this upcoming weekend at 7:20 on the ACC Network. The Hokies jumped up one spot in both the AP Poll and the Coaches Poll. Freshman quarterback Josh Jackson was 10-20 for 132 yards and three touchdowns, and backup quarterback AJ Bush, a junior, was 5-7 for 70 yards and a touchdown. However, the Hokies did not score an offensive touchdown until the second quarter. Defensive lineman Ricky Walker returned a fumble for a touchdown and Greg Stroman returned a punt 91 yards in the first quarter. Cam Phillips led the team with 5 receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown in the game. Coleman Fox ran 7 times for 59 yards, while Travon McMillian ran 11 times for 45 yards. The defense played better than the offense though as 7 different Hokies had at least 0.5 sacks. Tim Settle and Ricky Walker led the defense with a sack each, and they had 5 tackles for loss between the two of them. Reggie Floyd and Andrew Motuapuaka each had an interception as the defense completely shut down the North Carolina offense, allowing only 172 yards of total offense. The Hokies are the third highest ranked ACC team in the polls, with Clemson at #7 and Miami at #8. Clemson had a bye week as they prepare to host Georgia Tech this upcoming weekend. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 38-24 win over Wake Forest. Georgia Tech is second in the ACC Coastal Division with a 3-1 conference record, behind Miami who is 4-0. Clemson is second in the ACC Atlantic Division with a 4-1 conference record, behind North Carolina State, who is ranked #14 in the AP Poll and #15 in the Coaches Poll and is 6-1 overall, 4-0 in conference play. The Wolfpack had a bye week this week like the Tigers, and the Wolfpack host Clemson next weekend, which is setting up to be the biggest game in their division this season. The Hokies will also travel to Miami in two weeks to face the Hurricanes, which will be the most important game in the Coastal Division this season. Some are calling next weekend the semifinals for the ACC Championship game. Miami defeated Syracuse 27-19 in Hard Rock Stadium this past weekend and will play at North Carolina this weekend before hosting the Hokies. Virginia Tech is still in a great position and they control their own destiny to make the ACC Championship. The Hokies host Duke (4-4) this weekend and then will play at Miami and at Georgia Tech in Atlanta the next two weekends. On November 18th, the Hokies will host Pittsburgh for senior day in Lane Stadium. Six days later, the Hokies will travel to Charlottesville to try to defeat Virginia for the 14th straight year.
