Cassell Coliseum will be full this Friday as the Virginia Tech Hokies open their men’s basketball season against the Detroit Mercy at 6 p.m. https://twitter.com/VT_MBBall/status/928354843772817408 The Virginia Tech Athletics Department announced Wednesday that the Nov. 10th season opener will be sold out when the Hokies take on the Titans. Virginia Tech will face The Citadel in its second game of the season on Nov. 12th. According to Hokiesports.com, less than 250 tickets remain for the Sunday matchup with the Bulldogs. The Hokies had their best season so far under head coach Buzz Williams in 2016-17, going 22-11 overall and 10-8 in the ACC. Tech will look to build on that success as they seek a second straight bid to the NCAA tournament. Last year’s tournament appearance was the team’s first since 2007. Since Williams arrived in Blacksburg in 2014, the atmosphere in Cassell Coliseum has changed drastically. Virginia Tech averaged 7,476 fans per game last season, its highest since the 2010-11 season. The energy surrounding basketball games has increased over the past three seasons, and Friday’s sellout is proof of the excitement for this season to begin. This is also the second-straight season that the Hokies' home opener has sold out. This sell-out is a testament to the great job Buzz Williams has done. With home wins over three AP Top 25 teams last season, the increased attendance for Hokies' basketball is clearly an important factor for the team.
