Regan Magarity Delaware State 1 2016
The Virginia Tech Women's Basketball team opened the season this evening and defeated the Wagner Seahawks 99-32. The 67-point victory is the largest ever in school history. Led by Taylor Emery, the Hokies took a 52-15 lead into the locker room at halftime. Emery shot 7-11 from the floor and was 4-6 from three point range, adding five rebounds and three assists. The Hokies forced Wagner to commit 35 turnovers while they had just 12. 22 of those 35 turnovers came in the first half. Alexis Jean shared the spotlight with Taylor Emery, scoring 16 points in her debut. Jean shot 6 -7 from the field and had 4 rebounds and an assist. Redshirt-junior forward Regan Magarity had a strong performance for the Hokies with 12 points and 8 rebounds on 5 of 12 shooting. Kendyl Brooks and Rachel Camp also scored in double figures for the Hokies, with 12 and 10 points each. Aisha Sheppard, the true freshman guard out of Alexandria, also made her debut and scored 10 points. Chanette Hicks added 6 points while Kaela Kinder scored two. Head Coach Kenny Brooks played ten different players in this matchup and the Hokies led the entire game after the first basket. Tech's largest lead of the game was 67 points. The Hokies shot 53% from the field and 45% from three point range. Although it was not a difficult test, it was a good showing put on by the team against Wagner. To see them put up 99 points in their home opener is exciting and it shows that there is much to come for this team in it's second year under Coach Brooks. The Hokies start off the 2017-2018 season with a 1-0 record after the 99-32 win over Wagner and will face the Auburn Tigers on Monday, November 7. Virginia Tech defeated Auburn 92-87 in overtime last year on the road.
