Virginia Tech Drops Out of Top 25 After Georgia Tech Loss

HOKIES Flag 1
Virginia Tech lost 28-22 in a hard-fought game Saturday against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Hokies have a record of 7-3 and will host Pittsburgh in Lane Stadium this weekend at noon for senior day. Unfortunately, the Hokies dropped out of both the AP and Coaches Polls this week after the loss. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/929790865291317248 https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/929779279168196614 There were chances for Tech to pull away with the game on Saturday, including when the team led 22-21 in the fourth quarter after a Greg Stroman interception, but they could not hold on and as a result they fall in the rankings. Although the Hokies fell out of the rankings, they are right on the cusp of regaining their footing and jumping back into the polls. In both the AP and Coaches Polls, Virginia Tech is receiving the most votes out of any team that is not ranked. With a win this weekend against the Panthers, the Hokies would improve to 8-3 and most likely make a return to the rankings. This is the first time the Hokies have dropped out of the rankings in the 2017-2018 football season and the first time they are not ranked in the AP and Coaches Polls since week 13 of last season, leading up to the Commonwealth Cup clash against Virginia. VT was ranked until losing to Georgia Tech last season, but rebounded with wins over Notre Dame and Virginia to jump back in the top 25. The Hokies have two games left in the regular season and will travel to Charlottesville after this week for the Black Friday matchup against Virginia. Three other ACC teams remain in the top 25 going into week 13, highlighted by second-ranked Miami. The Hurricanes destroyed Notre Dame in Hard Rock Stadium 41-8 yesterday and impressed enough voters to jump from 7 in the AP Poll and 6 in the Coaches Poll to 2. Miami has a record of 9-0 and controls their own college football playoff destiny. Virginia Tech lost to Miami two weeks ago 28-10 which gave the Hurricanes their first quality win of the season. Miami’s next opponent is Virginia, who is coming off a 38-21 loss to Louisville. However, the Hurricanes have already clinched the division and will face Clemson on December 2 in Charlotte. The Tigers are coming off a 31-14 victory and will play the Citadel at home next weekend. Clemson is ranked 4th in the AP Poll and 3rd in the Coaches Poll, in which they jumped one spot from fourth. Clemson took care of business this weekend with a 31-14 win over Florida State. The final ranked ACC team is North Carolina State who is ranked 25th in the AP Poll and 22nd in the Coaches Poll. The Wolfpack escaped from a near loss against Boston College on Saturday, winning 17-14 in Chestnut Hill. North Carolina State was not ranked in the AP Poll last week, and they jumped two spots from 24 to 22 in the Coaches Poll. Virginia Tech hosts Pittsburgh this weekend in a game that Tech should be heavily favored to win. Recent bowl projections state that the Hokies might be slated for the TaxSlayer Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida, while others say that the Hokies have a great shot at playing in Orlando in the Citrus Bowl. Whatever the case may be, Virginia Tech needs to win these next two games to become ranked again and finish off the season strong.
