2019 Three-Star OG Jesse Hanson Visits Virginia Tech After Receiving VT Offer

Hokie Bird 1 1
Every year, Southwest Virginia usually produces at least 1-3 power 5 level recruits. One of those recruits in the 2019 class is three-star offensive guard Jesse Hanson. Last week, Virginia Tech decided to extend an offer to Hanson ahead of his first visit to Blacksburg this fall. https://twitter.com/jessehanson72/status/931337026829471744 Hanson told us that the timing of the offer was a "surprise" and that he wasn't expecting it to happen as soon as it did. The Lord Botetourt HS guard was excited about this offer telling us that he "really wanted this one." This past weekend, Hanson made his first visit of the fall to Virginia Tech and enjoyed what he saw. Jesse Hanson told us that he had a "great" visit to Blacksburg for the Pitt game. Hanson was impressed with how Virginia Tech's offensive coaching staff made it a priority to speak with him and ensured that he had a chance to spend some time with Justin Fuente. Hanson was also impressed with the environment saying that Lane Stadium "was extremely loud, and it wasn't even a sold out game." With this offer and visit, Virginia Tech improved their status "a lot" as Hanson now knows that VT is "a very true option" for him. Before Hanson was offered by VT; Duke, Iowa State, and Virginia were among the schools recruiting Hanson the hardest. Virginia and Duke have also built strong relationships between him and their coaches as well. The 6'4'' 290-pound OG from Daleville, Virginia is ranked as the 21st best recruit in Virginia by Rivals and the 247 Sports Composite. The 247 Sports Composite also has Hanson ranked as the 22nd best offensive guard in the 2019 class. Hanson is building a strong offer list as well that includes multiple power 5 schools:
  • ACC: Virginia Tech, Duke, Virginia
  • Big 12: West Virginia, Iowa State
  • Sun Belt: Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina
  • FCS/Future FBS Independent: Liberty
Based on recent class numbers, Virginia Tech seems likely to pursue signing at least two guards/centers with Jesse Hanson being among the top priorities alongside Riley Simonds who also visited this past weekend. On his visit, Virginia Tech was able to make it clear that Hanson is an offensive line priority for the Hokies even though VT offered months after schools like UVA, WVU, Duke, and Iowa State did. Virginia Tech has a lot of work ahead to build up their relationship with Hanson due to the recency of their offer. However, the Hokies should be considered a frontrunner given how much Hanson wanted this offer and VT's reputation for success compared to places like UVA, Duke, and Iowa State. Virginia could be a sleeper here as the Cavaliers not only have the same in-state advantage, but also have built up a strong relationship with him. Virginia also has some momentum on the football field as they are headed to their first bowl game in years, though the Hokies still have the clear advantage in that area with a Coastal title in 2016 and a 25-year bowl streak. The Hokies have made it clear that Jesse Hanson is a top target, and Hanson has taken notice. While the Hokies are the on-paper favorites given the regional ties and Hanson's desire to receive this offer, VT has plenty of work ahead if they are to get Hanson.
