Three-Star TE James Mitchell Commits to Virginia Tech

VT Cadets VT Flag 1
James Mitchell is one of the best college football recruits to come out of Southwest Virginia in the past decade. The Big Stone Gap, VA star saw his recruitment blow up with offers from plenty of power 5 programs outside of Virginia including Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisville, West Virginia, and South Carolina. In November, Mitchell trimmed his list down to a final 3 of Virginia Tech, Georgia, and Duke. After weeks of consideration, Mitchell decided to stay home. https://twitter.com/Greg_BHCSports/status/941758014536716288 James Mitchell announced that he has committed to Virginia Tech over Georgia and Duke. Mitchell is the Hokies' 24th commit of this class, but the first tight end commit. Mitchell is also the fifth in-state commit for the Hokies in the 2018 class. James Mitchell is rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals and is ranked as the 13th TE in the nation by them while ESPN has him as the seventh best TE-H. The 247 Sports Composite and Rivals have Mitchell ranked sixth in the state of Virginia while ESPN has him ranked 12th, and 247 Sports has him ranked in the Commonwealth. Mitchell was a must get player for the Hokies, and is a big pickup as the only on-scholarship TE that will sign with the Hokies this class. The Hokies have made Mitchell a priority for over the past year with VT making Mitchell even a greater priority after missing out on Kyle Pitts. It's also significant for the Hokies to lock down Southwest Virginia and not let the top recruit in the region go elsewhere. We've seen VT miss out on some talented SWVA towards the end of the Frank Beamer era including Chance Hall, but the Hokies have made big strides in locking down this area. Those strides have been especially significant this year with the commitments of Mitchell and Blacksburg star Cole Beck. James Mitchell profiles as more of a receiving tight end similar to Bucky Hodges and Drake Deiuliis. Mitchell does have the size and skills to become a quality blocker, but his receiving and athletic skills are what stand out and why he's become one of the top recruits in Virginia. Mitchell has ideal size at 6'5'' for a receiving tight end while having the frame to add some more weight to improve as a blocker. More than that, James Mitchell has impressed plenty of people with multiple coaches and principals at his high school praising his work ethic and character. Local sports writer have also had plenty of praise for the character of Mitchell including Allen Gregory of the Bristol Herald Courier. https://twitter.com/Greg_BHCSports/status/941495532358336512 The universal praise of Mitchell's character should excite Hokie fans even more beyond their excitement about his athletic and football abilities. Congrats to James Mitchell on his commitment to Virginia Tech.
