Khadim Sy Returns to Virginia Tech

Before Virginia Tech basketball began their main preparations for the 2017-18 season, the Hokies announced that Khadim Sy had left the program and university. At that point, no one imagined that Sy would return to the Hokies at any point in the future. Today, Sy and VT surprised us all. https://twitter.com/HokiesMBB/status/946099944632434689 Virginia Tech announced today that forward Khadim Sy has returned to VT. Sy will take a redshirt year this season and be a redshirt sophomore when he is eligible next season. While Sy's departure was a surprise, his return is unprecedented especially given how Sy left the university as a whole and was briefly at a community college as he appeared to be looking around for a new school. Instead, Sy has returned to Blacksburg to rejoin a program that is welcoming him back with open arms as Buzz Williams said in this Virginia Tech press release. "I am very happy that Khadim rejoined the team today. This has never happened in my career, and since his departure, all parties have worked to make sure that this was the right decision for everyone involved. Dream is an outstanding young man who will be able to spend this semester focusing on his academics and getting better in all aspects of his life, on and off the court. I believe this is the best possible move for Khadim and I know his teammates welcome him back to the program," Buzz Williams said on Khadim Sy's return. Khadim Sy averaged 4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks in 11.4 minutes per game as a freshman while shooting 56.7% from the field. Sy's return should give the Hokies some needed frontcourt depth while his redshirt year will allow him to focus on his development and transition back to Virginia Tech. Sy and the Hokies surprised everyone today with this news, but it remains to be seen if this will work out especially given how we've never seen something like this before.
