Terrell Edmunds comes in at #7.

2017 TLP Top 10 Hokies: #7 Terrell Edmunds

Our countdown of the top 10 Hokies from the 2017 season as voted by The Tech Lunch Pail staff continues at #7 with Terrell Edmunds.

With Chuck Clark leaving, Bud Foster was looking for some experience at the back end of the secondary at free safety. Foster decided to move Terrell Edmunds from rover to free safety in a move that worked fairly well. While Edmunds may be a better fit at rover, he adapted well at free safety and became a very good ball hawk for the Hokies, and a great leader in a veteran secondary.

Terrell Edmunds had a very good junior season despite only playing 10 games due to injuries with 59 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 4 pass breakups. Edmunds had the versatility to play either safety position before Divine Deablo’s season-ending injury and fit well at the free safety spot giving VT some man coverage at that position to allow Bud Foster to go with some different looks.

Edmunds wasn’t perfect in man coverage, but he was above-average for a safety and wasn’t a guy that teams could go after when VT went all man coverage even with their safeties. In zone, Edmunds was comfortable as a ball hawk who could make some great plays on deep passes to either break them up or intercepting. As a run defender, Edmunds’s more natural fit as a rover/strong safety showed as a heavy hitter who doesn’t miss a lot of tackles.

Edmunds’s strong junior season earned him Third Team All-ACC honors, an improvement on the Honorable Mention honors he earned in 2016. If Edmunds does end up returning, he definitely would be a contender for a spot on the Preseason All-ACC Team with Quin Blanding graduating and Derwin James leaving early for the NFL Draft.

If Terrell Edmunds decides to leave for the 2018 NFL Draft, his draft stock is somewhat of an unknown, but he projects as a strong safety who can be a heavy hitter with quality ball skills. Edmunds has the work ethic to be a quality contributor from the moment he arrives and would likely be a day 3 NFL Draft pick.
