Virginia Tech GK Ben Lundgaard Selected 21st Overall by Columbus Crew in MLS SuperDraft

Ben Lundgaard
Ben Lundgaard had an impressive career at Virginia Tech with 70 starts over his four years and 23 shutouts. Lundgaard finished his career with an impressive senior season that led him to earning First Team All-ACC honors plus Top Drawer Soccer Best XI Second Team honors. Lundgaard also led to Virginia Tech to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, breaking a nine-year drought. Today, Lundgaard found out his new MLS home. https://twitter.com/MLS/status/954412819491024896 Ben Lundgaard was selected 21st overall in the first round of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew. Lundgaard is only the second Hokie to be selected in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft joining Patrick Nyarko (7th overall-2008). Lundgaard is only the sixth Hokie to be selected in the MLS SuperDraft (though Marcelo Acuna is expected to make that seven). Ben Lundgaard was the fourth goalkeeper chosen in the draft Here's what Lundgaard had to say after being selected by the Columbus Crew. https://twitter.com/ColumbusCrewSC/status/954419101878730752 Goal.com lead soccer reporter/columnist Ives Galarcep had this to say on Lundgaard's future. https://twitter.com/SoccerByIves/status/954413145308778496 Columbus currently has arguably the best young goalkeeper in MLS in 22-year old Zack Steffen who has received US Men's National Team consideration. With Steffen in place, Lundgaard will be competing with Jon Kempin for the backup job though it wouldn't be surprising to see Lundgaard sent on a loan somewhere to gain some experience this upcoming season. Long term, Lundgaard could be the goalkeeper of the future for the Crew with Steffen likely to receive interest in the near future from teams in top European leagues. Steffen has played in Europe before as he left the University of Maryland to join Freiburg in the Bundesliga before returning to the US to play for the Crew. Congrats to Ben Lundgaard on being selected in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft.
