Virginia Tech Beats Syracuse on the Road 73-64

The Virginia Tech Women's Basketball team traveled to the Carrier Dome to face the Syracuse who were 11-0 at home. Led by Taylor Emery, who had 20 points and 9 rebounds, the Hokies pulled off a much-needed upset win up north 73-64. Virginia Tech came into this game with a 14-8 overall record and a 3-6 record in the ACC, searching for a road win in a tough environment. Coming off a tough loss to Miami this past weekend at home, the Hokies did not shoot phenomenally well in the first half (31.4%) but played tough defense on Syracuse to hold them to 28.6% shooting from the floor and a slim 1-18 from behind the arc. In the second half, Tech picked up the offense, shooting 42.4%, out-rebounding the Orange 56-50 overall, and never letting go of the lead again once they regained it. Coming off the bench, Chanette Hicks scored the second most points for the Hokies with 18. Hicks shot 6-11 from the floor and added two assists and three steals. Regan Magarity had her 11th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, which gave a huge boost to Tech's offense. Kendyl Brooks scored 10 points, her first time in double figures since December 16th against High Point. She also added four assists and three rebounds. Alexis Jean and Rachel Camp were the other two starters for the Hokies tonight and they each had 4 points. They may not have had a huge contribution scoring-wise, but Jean had four rebounds while Camp had 10 rebounds and four assists, a very good stat-line. Michelle Berry came off the bench and provided a huge spark like Hicks did, grabbing 8 rebounds and scoring four points in her 18 minutes of play. It was a great game for the Hokies and a huge confidence booster for the team going into Chapel Hill next Wednesday to play a decent North Carolina team that has been very solid at home, including a win over then No. 15 Duke. The Hokies improve to 15-8 and 4-6 in the ACC, sitting 10th in the conference standings. A big road game against North Carolina stands between a home matchup next weekend to get revenge against their in-state rival, Virginia.
