Following the men’s basketball team’s win Saturday night, #9 Virginia Tech Wrestling joined the party and defeated UVA 22-18 Sunday in Charlottesville. With starter Brent Moore sidelined with the flu, the Hokies forfeited the first match of the day at 141. At the 149 weight class, Ryan Blees, the #16 wrestler in the country at 149, went down in the first two periods. Blees trailed UVA’s Sam Krivus 5-1 at the start of the third period, but a late rally sent the match into overtime tied at 6-6. Blees got a single leg takedown on Krivus to score an 8-6 decision and get the Hokies on the board. Solomon Chishko dropped his bout at 157, losing 6-4 to UVA’s Fred Green. The next five matches all featured ranked wrestlers for the Hokies. As they’ve done all season with their back-loaded roster, the Hokies dominated the heavier weight classes. David McFadden, the number three wrestler in the 165 weight class, dominated his match over UVA’s Andrew Atkinson, winning 7-2 with 2:43 of riding time in the bout. Freshman Hunter Bolen, who has worked his way up to number 15 in the 174 class, narrowly won his match 6-5 thanks to a late takedown and securing the riding time point. Bolen’s victory put the overall team score at 9 points apiece. Zack Zavatsky, ranked eighth at 184, nearly scored a technical fall in his match against Drew Peck, but a last second reversal by Peck gave put the score at 24-12. With riding time, Zavatsky earned a 25-12 major decision to make the team score 13-9. Second-ranked Jared Haught proved he is worthy of his praise, earning a pin in 2:12 at the 197 weight class, putting the team score at 19-9 with three matches to go. Heavyweight Andrew Dunn, who is ranked 18th in his class, earned a 4-0 decision for Tech’s last win of the night, making the team score 22-9. At the 125 weight class, the Hokies sent freshman Ryan More out on the mat to face UVA’s Louie Hayes, a fellow freshman who is ranked 15th in the country. Hayes pinned More in 3:48 to make the score 22-15. In the 133 match, Tech sent Ryan Haskett to face Sam Book. The match featured a controversial takedown call which head coach Tony Robie challenged, but to no avail. Book sent the match into overtime and ultimately won 13-11. With the dual win, the Hokies improve to 14-2 on the season and stay undefeated in ACC dual meets. Virginia Tech's next match comes this Friday as they travel to Raleigh to take on #6 NC State in a match that will decide the ACC Dual Meet Championship.
