Virginia Tech Beats Georgia Tech 76-56

After one of the biggest wins in school history over top-ranked Virginia, Virginia Tech had a hard time against Duke four days later, losing by 22. Buzz Williams’ team needed a response, and a loss today would have given the NCAA tournament committee doubts about the Hokies. However, the Hokies were ready for the challenge, beating Georgia Tech in Atlanta by a final score of 76-56. Justin Robinson had a tough game against Duke with only 5 points, but he got back on track today. Right out of the gate, Robinson stung the Yellow Jackets with a 3-pointer. He finished with 18 on the day, his 20th game of the season in double figures. From the opening whistle, this game was all Virginia Tech. The Hokies dominated almost every aspect of the game, including shooting percentage (53% to 36%), 3-point percentage (50% to 16%), rebounds (36 to 30), and assists (21 to 9). VT did have 13 turnovers, but only had 3 at halftime and likely would have had 10 or less if it wasn't for the blowout nature of this game. Virginia Tech also had 13 offensive rebounds and 38 points in the paint, a significant improvement from Wednesday. Tech led at halftime by a score of 43-29, and they didn’t let off the breaks. Buzz’s boys started the second half with a 21-3 run, and lead 71-36 with 9:35 left in the contest. At that point, the starters started coming out of the game, and some young Hokies got some action. Tyrie Jackson finished the game with six for Tech. The only Yellow Jacket that could get any shots to fall was Tadric Jackson, who finished with 17 on the day. Otherwise, Georgia Tech put up more bricks than a millionare’s mansion, especially from the three-point line (4 makes in 25 attempts). The boys of Atlanta dropped to 11-16, as their cextremely-slim chances at an NCAA tournament bid will have to come via the ACC tournament. Otherwise, Nickeil Alexander Walker finished with 14, and Justin Bibbs finished with 10 on what was a good offensive day for the Hokies. Kerry Blackshear lead Tech in rebounds with eight on the day. Virginia Tech improved to 19-8 and 8-6 in the ACC, and will look for that all-important 20th win against #11 Clemson. They will meet at Cassell Coleseum this Wednesday at 7 PM, which will be Tech’s first home game in two weeks.
