For the second-straight season, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team has reached the Elite Eight of the WNIT. The Hokies defeated Fordham Thursday night 81-50 in Cassell Coliseum. The team achievement wasn’t the only highlight of the night, though. Junior guard Taylor Emery was honored before the game for setting Tech’s’ all-time single-season scoring record. Regan Magarity had a shining moment during the game, snagging nine rebounds to bring her season total to 321, a new program record. She had set the previous record at 316 last season. The Hokies and the Rams tipped off at 7:05 last night and Virginia Tech dominated from the start. Taylor Emery started the scoring with a layup with 9:01 left in the first quarter. Fordham’s Mary Goulding responded with a layup of her own to even the score, but that was the last time it would be that close. Tech led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Hokies scored 31 points in the second quarter to take a 21-point lead into halftime. Fordham was unable to cut into the deficit and Tech won the game by 31-points, its largest win since beating Monmouth by 50 in December. Junior guard Rachel Camp led the Hokies in scoring with 20 points. She also grabbed four rebounds and added four assists to her stat totals on Thursday. Magarity was right behind Camp, scoring 17 points for Tech in the Round of 16 game. She added nine rebounds and two assists. Magarity was 8-for-15 from the field. Emery scored 15 points for the Hokies, grabbing six rebounds and adding one assist while also leading the team in minutes played with 30. Emery was 7-for-12 from the field and 1-for-3 from beyond the arc. Aisha Sheppard and Alexis Jean led the Hokies in three-point shots, each making three. Jean was also 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. The Hokies managed to have a high-scoring game despite shooting just 34.5 percent from the field, lower than their season average of 41.5 percent. Tech also shot 35.3 percent on three-pointers, which was better than their season average of 33. Up next, the Hokies will take on Alabama in Blacksburg on Sunday. The Crimson Tide defeated Georgia Tech to make it to the Elite Eight. The Hokies and Tide have only ever played two games, with Tech winning both of them in 2003 and 2004.
