Virginia Tech’s storybook WNIT run came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Hokies lost 65-57 to indiana in the WNIT Championship Game at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Indiana. Virginia Tech made a deep run in the WNIT for the second straight season, having reached the quarterfinals last year, but they weren’t able to bring home the title. The game was back and forth in the beginning, but it wouldn’t stay that way. Indiana scored first 12 seconds into the game, but the Hokies came back and took a two-point lead with 7:12 to go in the first quarter. After the first media timeout, it was all Indiana. The Hoosiers 17-13 at the end of the quarter. Indiana only got hotter in the second quarter, breaking away from the Hokies and taking a 36-27 lead into halftime. Virginia Tech started to chip away at the lead in the second half, trailing by three at the third quarter media timeout. A three-pointer by Regan Magarity with 48 seconds left in the quarter gave the Hokies a 44-43 lead entering the fourth quarter. That lead would be the last for the Hokies, however. Indiana went on a 7-2 and had a 52-46 lead at the fourth quarter media timeout. The Hokies would get the score within five with 1:54 to go in the game, but Indiana broke away again to win the game 65-57. Taylor Emery led all scorers in the game with 23 points. She was 9-for-18 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. She also added four rebounds and four assists for the Hokies. Emery was the only Hokie to score double digits in the game. Alexis Jean was second in scoring for Virginia Tech with nine points. She was 3-for-7 on field goals and 2-for-5 from three-point range. Regan Magarity led the Hokies in rebounds with 15. She had 11 defensive boards for the Hokies. Ball control was a difference maker in the game as Virginia Tech turned the ball over 17 times. Indiana scored 20 points off turnovers during the game. The Hoosiers also scored 42 points in the paint to the Hokies’ 20. Taylor Emery and Regan Magarity were named to the WNIT All-Tournament Team. Taylor Emery led the Hokies in scoring in three of the tournament games, scoring 23 points against George Mason, West Virginia and Indiana. Regan Magarity led the team in rebounding in three WNIT games, snagging double-digit rebounds against Alabama, West Virginia and Indiana. While the Hokies were unable to bring home the WNIT title, there is optimism around the program. There is only one senior on the team and all five of the Hokies’ starters should return for the 2018-19 season. Head coach Kenny Brooks has greatly improved the team in his second season at the helm and there is no reason to think he won’t continue to take the team to new heights.
