LB Dean Ferguson Recaps His Great Virginia Tech Spring Game Visit

Hokie Bird 1
Virginia Tech has a short list of linebackers that they are showing interest in including in-state LBs Brandon Smith and Dean Ferguson. Ferguson visited VT for their annual Spring Game this past weekend and caught up with us to talk about his visit to Blacksburg and more. "This visit was great. It was nice getting back down to Tech and feeling the atmosphere," Ferguson told us. "Whenever I come down, there’s always a nice family atmosphere and appreciation for each other." Ferguson told us that the Hokies are "high" up in his recruitment after his visit. Ferguson also feels he would be a "perfect fit" in Bud Foster's defense as someone who has the speed, football IQ, and physicality to be a perfect fit at linebacker. The Hokies were among the first to offer Ferguson and have made him one of their top linebacker targets since. Similar to Alan Tisdale, Ferguson has grown from being a safety into an outside linebacker who brings some quality coverage ability. That versatility makes him a guy who could project at backer or at whip linebaker where some of his safety experience could be a valuable addition. While the whip spot is becoming more of a nickelback spot for a defensive back, Ferguson profiles in the Anthony Shegog group of linebackers who could bring above-average coverage skills to that spot. Right now, Ferguson's recruitment appears to largely be an in-state battle between the Hokies and Virginia. Other regional schools like Maryland and West Virginia also loom large in his recruitment, but may have some ground to make up on VT and UVA. Currently, Dean Ferguson doesn't seem too close to a decision, but Virginia Tech has put themselves in a good position heading into the summer as they continue to show lots of interest in him despite numbers being tight.
