Virginia Tech Women's Lacrosse Earns First NCAA Tournament Bid

HOKIES Flag 1
When John Sung was hired two years ago, most expected that Sung would have a very difficult job in Blacksburg with it likely taking years to make Virginia Tech relevant in the ACC. Sung took on that challenge and showed that the Hokies weren't nearly as far away from becoming one of the ACC's best women's lacrosse programs. Last night, the Hokies made history in only the second season of the John Sung era. https://twitter.com/HokiesLax/status/993307273677156352 The Virginia Tech women's lacrosse received its first NCAA Tournament bid in their almost two-decade history. The Hokies will face Georgetown in the first round on Friday with the winner facing #2 overall seed North Carolina. First and second round action is scheduled to take place at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, NC. While VT made a strong push to try to make the field last year, there were no worries about the Hokies making it this year after finishing third in the ACC with a 5-2 conference record, 13-6 overall record, and #12 ranking nationally in the Inside Lacrosse Poll. Four of the six Hokies' losses came against teams that are seeded in the top 4 (UNC, Boston College, James Madison), a sign that VT has been well-tested while also picking up some quality wins over NCAA Tournament teams like Denver, Syracuse, and Virginia. The Hokies' first round opponent Georgetown has a pair of victories over NCAA Tournament teams in Johns Hopkins and Denver. If the Hokies do advance past Georgetown, they'll face a UNC that has beat them twice but only by 1 in Chapel Hill the first time, and in the ACC Tournament after VT beat Duke in a game that took several hours to complete, putting VT completely out of routine for rest. Led by four All-ACC selections including seniors Meagh Graham, Tristan McGinley, and Kelly Glatthorn; the Hokies have had an incredible transformation under John Sung with a mix of experience and youth taking VT to higher levels than ever before. Going into the NCAA Tournament, the Hokies are a battle-tested team with an older roster that will be ready to play on the biggest stage in women's lacrosse. Congrats to Virginia Tech on earning its first NCAA Tournament bid.
