2021 WR Gavin Blackwell Talks About His Virginia Tech Offer

Hokie Bird 1
Virginia Tech has had a lot of success recruiting wide receivers from North Carolina headlined by 2018 signee Tre Turner and 2019 commit Elijah Bowick. The Hokies are hoping that continues into the future including in the 2021 class with Gavin Blackwell. Last week, Blackwell received his first power 5 offer. https://twitter.com/Gavo2times_/status/992187770306289664 Gavin Blackwell told us that he was "speechless" after Holmon Wiggins came to his spring practice. Blackwell's VT offer came after Wiggins watched him run a couple of routes during his spring practice. If you can't tell from his initial reaction, Blackwell was definitely surprised by the offer. "It was definitely a surprise. I’ve talked to some coaches before but I didn’t expect them to offer me," Blackwell said on whether he was expecting the offer or not. So how did the offer affect VT's standing in his recruitment early on? "It was a very big offer and other schools are starting to look at me now, but Virginia Tech will definitely always be highly considered," Blackwell said. The fact that the Hokies were the first power 5 offer for a recruit within 3.5 hours of Blacksburg is definitely an advantage that the Hokies should have throughout his recruitment. Blackwell told us that he definitely wants to take a visit to Virginia Tech this summer while also considering taking visits to West Virginia, South Carolina, UNC, and NC State. Currently, Blackwell isn't as big of a name in the recruiting world as his star teammate, 2019 Florida State QB commit Sam Howell. However, don't be surprised to see Blackwell's recruitment begin to take off as more schools pay attention to him and not just Howell. Blackwell jumped onto the recruiting scene in 2017 after having 23 catches for 538 yards and 5 touchdowns as a freshman according to SEC Country. The most impressive stat may be the fact that Blackwell averaged 23.4 yards per reception as a freshman, showing some big play potential. The Hokies are the first power 5 program to get involved in Gavin Blackwell's recruitment, but definitely won't be the last. However, VT will likely benefit greatly from being his first power 5 offer.
