Virginia Tech Will Face Penn State in 2018 ACC/Big Ten Challenge

The Virginia Tech Hokies will travel to Happy Valley next season for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, according to Jon Rothstein.

The CBS Sports insider tweeted the news Wednesday evening, saying that Penn State would host Virginia Tech as part of the annual basketball series between the two conferences.

Neither school has confirmed the matchups, which Rothstein received from a source. Dates and times for the 2018 series have not yet been announced.

Next season’s matchup will be the fifth consecutive year that the Hokies have participated in the series, and the 13th overall.

The Hokies have faced Penn State twice previously in the series, losing both times. Penn State hosted Tech in 2007, winning 66-61. The second matchup between the two teams resulted in a 61-58 win for the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley.

Justin Bibbs, a freshman at the time, scored 16 points in that game, while adding five rebounds for the Hokies. Ahmed Hill scored six points and snagged eight rebounds in the matchup.

The 2018 game will be just the ninth all-time meeting between the two programs. The Hokies are 6-2 against Penn State, the two losses coming in the two ACC/Big Ten Challenge games.

Virginia Tech is 5-7 overall in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, but have fared well recently in the series winning their last two games.

The Hokies defeated Michigan 73-70 in a nail-biter on the road during the 2016 season. Tech staved off a late surge by the Wolverines to win the game, securing their first ACC/Big Ten Challenge win.

Tech won their matchup during the 2017-18 season, defeating Iowa 79-55 at home. The Hokies broke away in the second half en route to a dominating victory over the Hawkeyes.

Thanks in part to the Hokies, the ACC has won the series the past two seasons, improving to 12-5-2 all-time against the Big Ten.
