Virginia Tech Offers Three-Star UCONN RB Commit Darrin Smith

VT Cadet 1
Last month, three-star RB Darrin Smith from Frisco, Texas committed to Connecticut weeks after taking a visit to the Huskies. However, that hasn't stopped other schools from pursuing or offering him including Virginia Tech. https://twitter.com/DarrinDjSmith4/status/1003444253270429701 Virginia Tech extended Darrin Smith his 22nd offer. The Hokies are the fourth power 5 program to offer Smith joining TCU, Nebraska, and Colorado. "I was in awe. I’ve been talking with them for months now and I’m just really excited," Smith said about his VT offer. Smith added that while he was expecting the Hokies to offer, the offer does make a "huge impact" on his recruitment because Virginia Tech is a "big time program." The Hokies had previously been showing Smith interest and were already "building up the relationship" before deciding to offer him. In addition, Smith told us that he does plan to make a visit to Blacksburg on top of hopes to visit Colorado and San Diego State this summer. During his high school playing days, Smith has shown some versatility as an all-purpose back who can be used in the rushing and passing game. According to 247 Sports, Smith has had 43 receptions in 3 years of high school football including 19 receptions last fall. Since arriving at Virginia Tech, Justin Fuente has wanted to have versatile running backs who can make a difference on the ground and in the passing game as a part of his offense, something that is appealing to Smith. "I love it. They use their RB in a lot of different ways which I like," Smith said about how he feels he would fit in Justin Fuente's offense. Currently, Smith told us that he is "good" with his commitment to Connecticut but the Huskies will have some power 5 challengers circling as they fight to hold onto him including the Hokies. Virginia Tech has a lot of work ahead of themselves in order to give themselves a chance at flipping Smith but for now, the Hokies are laying the groundwork to do just that.
