Virginia Tech Football Will Play Middle Tennessee State in 2020 and 2021

Virginia Tech fans were disappointed when news broke that Michigan had chosen to cancel their upcoming home-and-series with the Hokies. The news meant that Whit Babcock and his staff had to find a replacement for those open spots on the 2020 and 2021 schedules. Today, the Hokies announced a replacement for Michigan. https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/1006204497520193536 Virginia Tech will face Middle Tennessee State in a home-and-home series during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The Hokies will travel to MTSU on September 19th, 2020 with the Hokies hosting the Blue Raiders on September 11th, 2021. This home-and-home series will be the first two times these two teams face each other in football. While some fans may have been hoping for a power 5 opponent to replace Michigan, doing that didn't make a lot of sense with Penn State on the 2020 schedule, and West Virginia and Notre Dame on the 2021 schedule, giving VT no major reason to pursue that type of opportunity. In addition, most power 5 teams' schedules for 2020 and 2021 are already full, leaving very few options who may not have the flexibility required anyway. One move that VT could have done as to try to play in a major neutral site game in 2020 game followed by bringing a Group of 5 team to play at home in 2021. However, that would have likely cost the Hokies a significantly greater amount of money than the Hokies are paying for these games as David Teel of the Daily Press mentioned. https://twitter.com/DavidTeelatDP/status/1006214715431780352 The financials of this deal matter and the fact that the Hokies are only paying $250k for these two games is definitely a positive compared to the $1.8 million Michigan is paying for one game. For Hokie fans looking to make the trip, it is a little over 6 hours away from Blacksburg, but Murfreesboro is within an hour of Nashville as some have mentioned. https://twitter.com/ChrisColemanTSL/status/1006213733851582465 This game does present a great opportunity to take the Hokies to another area where Hokie fans rarely get to see VT play on their turf. In addition, Tennessee is a solid recruiting state and the Hokies now can tell recruits from Tennessee that they will have the chance to play in their home state if they come to Blacksburg.
