Virginia Tech Football Recruiting Notes 6/11/18

VT Cadets VT Flag 1
Virginia Tech had a busy weekend on the recruiting trail hosting a large group of talented recruits while gaining a commitment from four-star Richmond athlete Jaden Payoute. Given the Payoute news, some other recruiting stories involving VT flew under the radar including these notes from the weekend.

Riley Simonds Sets a Decision Date

On Sunday, Riley Simonds announced that he will be making his decision next week. https://twitter.com/simonds_riley9/status/1005865073116631045 Simonds will announce his commitment on June 20th and choose between Virginia Tech, Florida, and Missouri. Simonds recently took an official visit to Florida but despite that official, the Hokies remain the favorites for Simonds and I continue to stand by my prediction of Simonds to VT. The Hokies are putting together one of their best offensive line classes in recent memory with Bryan Hudson and Jesse Hanson already on board. However, adding Simonds to this class would give the Hokies three guys who will be no lower than consensus high three-star recruits, something that we haven't seen happen in a long time for VT in offensive line recruiting.

Virginia Tech Makes the Final 4 for Three-Star WR Jacoby Pinckney

Jacoby Pinckney has been one of VT's top wide receiver targets in the 2019 class and recently, the three-star WR released his final 4. https://twitter.com/jpinckney18/status/1005932655089680384 The Hokies made Pinckney's final 4 alongside Michigan, Georgia, and Alabama. While the Hokies are considered the favorite by many, Pinckney has been relatively quiet throughout his recruitment, leaving some room for speculation. If the Hokies are able to get Pinckney, he would be the latest talented receiver to join this class alongside Payoute and three-star WR Elijah Bowick, two other bigger receivers. VT has done a great job maintaining their status as a major player in Pinckney's recruitment even as his offer list has grown exponentially and because of it, the Hokies are the on-paper favorites at this point.

2020 Five-Star WR Julian Fleming Visits Virginia Tech

After the Hokies had some big visitors in Blacksburg on Saturday, Virginia Tech had an elite visitor on campus this weekend, five-star WR Julian Fleming. Earlier today, Fleming sent out a tweet from his weekend visit to Blacksburg. https://twitter.com/julian_040/status/1006236402768629760 While this is a very uphill battle for the Hokies, Virginia Tech clearly left a strong impression on Fleming this past weekend. This was not Fleming's first trip to Blacksburg which was also a great visit that included Fleming receiving his offer from Justin Fuente at the 50-yard line of Lane Stadium before the Hokies faced Clemson. While this visit likely didn't have a moment as incredible at that one, it's clear that the Hokies impressed Fleming again this weekend. Going forward, the Hokies will have a very tough challenge trying to hold off Penn State and others for the #2 recruit in the nation. However, VT continues to show that they will be a major player for the Pennsylvania star.
