Reports: Virginia Tech Will Hire Tyrone Nix to Replace Galen Scott

Defense 1
For the past few weeks, Virginia Tech has been looking for a replacement for Galen Scott after he resigned. In the interim, Justin Hamilton was filling his spot on the staff allowing the Hokies to send Hamilton on the road. Now, the Hokies have a replacement for Scott. https://twitter.com/ESPNRittenberg/status/1006919087442800642 Texas A&M senior analyst Tyrone Nix has been hired to replace Galen Scott. According to The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, Nix will take over the safeties coach role that Scott previously held. https://twitter.com/BruceFeldmanCFB/status/1006924315428675585 Tyrone Nix has a lot of high-level experience as he was the defensive coordinator at Southern Miss from 2001-2004, co-defensive coordinator at South Carolina from 2005-2007, defensive coordinator at Ole Miss from 2008-2011, and defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State from 2012-2016. This will be the first time he is not either a defensive coordinator or co-defensive coordinator when holding an on-field assistant position since 2000 when he was the DBs coach at Southern Miss. While Nix may not be the flashiest hire, he does bring a lot of experience as a defensive coordinator from his time all over the SEC and Conference USA. One concern may be that he hasn't coached defensive backs specifically since 2000, but Nix should be able to step into the role well given his extensive experience as a defensive coordinator and the large role he's likely had o all defensive position groups during that time. Nix's hire makes him the third current or former defensive coordinator on the Hokies' staff alongside defensive coordinator Bud Foster and CBs coach Brian Mitchell.
