Mark Zagunis Makes MLB Debut

Tim Thomas

Virginia Tech has a couple of former baseball players currently in the major leagues with Chad Pinder playing regularly for the Oakland Athletics and Jesse Hahn being in Oakland’s pitching rotation. However, that number has grown to three for now.

Yesterday, a third Hokie got the call to the majors with the Chicago Cubs promoting Mark Zagunis with Jason Heyward going on the DL and Kyle Schwarber being demoted. Last night, Zagunis made his MLB debut with the Cubs and achieve a first of his major league career.

Zagunis hit ninth in the Cubs’ order and went 0-for-5 in his first MLB start but also had a RBI in his first at-bat for the Cubs. Zagunis appears likely to at least have a platoon role for the Cubs and possibly a full-time starting role while Jason Heyward is on the DL and Kyle Schwarber is in the minors.

Congrats to Mark Zagunis on his MLB debut.
