Hokies Softball: Breanna Davenport is Having a Breakout Season

The Virginia Tech Hokies' softball team has gotten off to a strong 13-3 start on the season though they are 0-2 in ACC play after losing both games of a doubleheader at North Carolina. However, the Hokies are definitely emerging as one of the top teams in the ACC with their numerous quality wins. Part of the reason is because of some of the new freshmen in the program with one freshmen in particular having a breakout season. Outfielder Breanna Davenport is showing star potential in her first season with the Hokies as she is already one of the top position players for Virginia Tech. Davenport has been one of the best hitters on a Virginia Tech softball team that has hit .307 and has caused opposing pitchers to have an ERA of 6.16 against the Hokies. Davenport has done a great job of getting on base in the first 16 games with a batting average of .389 and an on-base percentage of .484 with only senior Kylie McGoldrick having better numbers than that on the Hokies. Davenport has shown impressive plate discipline for a freshman with 9 walks already on the season. Breanna Davenport is a well-rounded hitter that also has shown some power and run producing abilities so far. Davenport currently has 2 home runs and 13 RBIs with 6 doubles as well to give her a slugging percentage of .611 on the season. Davenport's RBIs and slugging percentage are fourth on the team while she is tied with McGoldrick for the team lead in doubles. Davenport also has no errors so far this season and while she will likely have a couple at some point, she is already showing that she is a reliable defensive outfielder. Davenport can do some damage on the base paths with 1 stolen base so far in 2015. Breanna Davenport is emerging as a star outfielder for the Hokies that is a difference maker at the plate and reliable on defense. Hokie fans have plenty of reasons to be excited about the bright future of Davenport.
