Hokies Baseball: Virginia Tech Beats #1 Virginia 2-1

The Virginia Tech Hokies haven't had the best start to the 2015 baseball season, but have shown a lot of promise multiple times especially from the pitching staff. However, the Hokies have had some struggles with three straight losses at Wake Forest and William & Mary entering today. Most people expected that losing streak to be extended by the #1 team in the country, the Virginia Cavaliers. However, the Hokies were able to surprise a lot of people. Virginia Tech defeated the #1 Virginia Cavaliers thanks to UVA pitcher Josh Sborz giving up a four-pitch walk-off walk to Brendon Hayden. This is a big win for the Hokies that brings their record to 8-9 on the season and 2-2 in the ACC while Virginia falls to 12-3 on the season and 2-2 in the ACC. This win is also the fourth time that the Hokies have beat the number 1 team in program history. Both teams scored in the first inning with Matt Thaiss and Brendon Hayden each having RBI singles. After that, the Hokies had plenty of opportunities, but ended the game with 10 runners left on base. Sean Keselica was dominant on the mound against the Cavaliers as he had a complete game with 4 strikeouts along with only 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 unearned run allowed. Keselica was in control in this game, and improved his record to 3-1 on the season. Keselica is forming a dangerous 1-2 punch at the top of the Virginia Tech rotation with Jon Woodcock, and Keselica should be able to keep pitching at a very high level throughout ACC play. The Hokies had great plate discipline in this game with Virginia Tech getting 7 walks from the Cavaliers. Brendon Hayden was the most effective as he was 2 for 3 at the plate with a walk and 2 RBIs. Hayden has been Virginia Tech's best power hitter this season and possibly the best hitter overall though Erik Payne has been very good in his first season with the Hokies. This is a great win for the Hokies led by some great pitching from Sean Keselica and great plate discipline for the Hokies.
