Hokies Football: Travon McMillian Could Push For A Starting Spot Next Fall

Last fall, Travon McMillian arrived as a quarterback, but the coaches quickly decided to move him from quarterback to running back with both Andrew Ford and Chris Durkin also arriving on campus. The coaches moved McMillian to running back knowing that he had the athletic skills to make that position change. After redshirting last fall, McMillian is looking to prove that he should get some playing time next fall. So far, McMillian is showing that he might even have a chance to earn the starting running back job depending on what happens over the rest of the spring and in August. In the first spring scrimmage, McMillian received first team reps though we later learned that Shane Beamer wanted to get McMillian more playing time and let J.C. Coleman and Trey Edmunds get some rest. However, McMillian looked quite impressive with a 52-yard rushing touchdown in his 5 carries for 66 yards. Even if you take out the 52-yard touchdown, McMillian still averaged 4 yards per carry on the other four carries, which might not be great but is still fairly solid. In his carries, Travon McMillian showed that he has impressive acceleration that allows him to get into a hole before an opposing defensive lineman or linebacker can get into in some cases. McMillian also is a very dangerous player in space that can use his speed to break off a 10-15+ yard run. McMillian is light on his feet and very agile, which makes him even more dangerous in space when he may be going against an opposing defensive back one-on-one. McMillian may not have many signature juke moves just yet, but he does have the agility to make a quick move that can make a defensive back look bad and turn a big run into a touchdown. The one thing McMillian has a lot of room to grow in is his strength. McMillian is six feet tall but only weighs 194 pounds and is not a guy that you would expect to be able to run through an opposing defender. McMillian does not have the most experience but as he gets more playing time, his vision should continue to improve. Travon McMillian has only been at running back for less than a year, and is showing that he has made a lot of strides since making the transition from quarterback to running back. McMillian has a lot of potential and is definitely ready to make a push to not only get some playing time, but also possibly earn the starting running back job.
