Hokies Football: The Incredible Athleticism and Upside of Adonis Alexander

The Hokies are preparing for their second of three spring scrimmages before the 2015 Spring Game and have started moving some players around. Meanwhile, the coaches have started to get an understanding of the skills of the Class of 2015 commits that enrolled early to join the Hokies for Spring Practice. Entering the spring, most of the attention was on Mook Reynolds, Austin Clark, and Yosuah Nijman. However, another early enrollee has started to gain some more attention in recent weeks. Adonis Alexander entered this spring as an under-the-radar player with tremendous size that had been compared to Kam Chancellor. However, Alexander has already shown this spring that he has tremendous athleticism that makes his potential even bigger. https://twitter.com/AndyBitterVT/status/586300854959009792 Those athletic statistics are impressive and he also has the frame where he can some weight without losing that athleticism. Alexander is starting to show that he has one of the biggest ceilings of any player from the Class of 2015. Alexander entered the spring as a rover, but Torrian Gray and the Hokies are actually giving him some time at cornerback. Alexander has tremendous size for the position while he has the speed to actually play the position. It doesn't seem likely right now that Adonis Alexander will stay at cornerback, but he is showing the skills that may make him the starting rover in 2016. Alexander does seem to play fairly aggressively and not timid, which is something that Bud Foster wants from every player on his defense. Alexander also seems like a very good run-defending rover when the Hokies put him around the box and let him make some plays as he showed in the first scrimmage. In that scrimmage, Alexander put up some impressive numbers in the scrimmage as he had 6 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Alexander played safety in high school and his man coverage are not likely very good though Torrian Gray is definitely the guy to work with to improve those skills. Alexander also can afford to bulk up some from 193 pounds to around 210 pounds without giving up any athleticism. However, the biggest thing with Alexander is the fact that he has the potential to be a special player. Alexander may have the best combination of athleticism and size that the Hokies have had on the roster in a while. On top of that, Alexander is showing that he has some solid skills to be a really good rover though he still has a long way to go. However, Alexander could be one of those players that by the time 2018 comes around, we look back and see how the Hokies once again turned an under-the-radar 3-star safety into a great defensive back. Adonis Alexander has huge potential, and it should be very exciting to see him develop over the next few seasons.
