Virginia Tech Basketball: Unofficially, Hokies Will Play in the 2016 Orlando Classic: Update: New Reports Show VT Won't Play In 2016 Orlando Classic

Every year, the Virginia Tech Hokies' men's basketball program looks to play in at least one tournament to get some extra games on the schedule. This past year, that tournament was the Cancun Challenge and in 2015, that tournament will be the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Florida. However, more news about a future tournament that the Hokies are very likely to play in was revealed this evening. The Virginia Tech Hokies are unofficially a participant in the 2016 Orlando Classic, formerly known as the Old Spice Classic. This tournament is played at HP Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Disney World. This tournament is shown on ESPN and usually happens either right before or after Thanksgiving. The Hokies revealed this at an event for student basketball season ticket holders this evening. There has not been an official announcement yet about the Hokies playing in that preseason tournament in 2016 though it is no surprise that Virginia Tech has already reached an agreement given the need to do work on the 2016 non-conference schedule for other possible big games to avoid conflicts. The only other team that is rumored to be known to be in the field is Quinnipiac which would be the MAAC's representative as the host conference. However, the field traditionally has mostly power conference programs outside of the MAAC representative. The Hokies should be a very interesting team to watch in the 2016 Orlando Classic, and would potentially be a contender for the final depending on who is in the field. Buzz Williams has done a tremendous job building the program, and this should be a great launching pad for a season in which the Hokies will likely have NCAA Tournament aspirations if not aspirations to finish in the top 25 in the polls depending on the 2015-2016 season. If you ever wanted to go to Disney World for Thanksgiving, 2016 may be your chance to not only visit the Magic Kingdom and eat some turkey legs, but also watch some Hokie basketball all in the same trip. 10/30 Update: Reports have now emerged with the eight-team field for the 2016 Orlando Classic. These reports do not include the Hokies, and we now believe that we made a mistake. We apologize for the mistake in our information.
