Hokies Football: Mook Reynolds Has Had An Unsurprisingly Strong Spring

Entering the spring, the Virginia Tech Hokies had plenty of optimism about having a strong spring, and both the offense and defense have made some progress. There were some players that brought a lot of hype surrounding them with fans and analysts believing that they would have strong springs. Mook Reynolds was one of those players that was expected to have a strong spring, and that is exactly what he has done. Reynolds started the spring behind Greg Stroman, Terrell Edmunds, and Shawn Payne in pursuit of the third or fourth cornerback spot. With Donovan Riley moving to rover and Chuck Clark staying at cornerback for now, this battle for the fourth cornerback spot would technically be a battle for one of the top spots at cornerback on the depth chart until the return of Kendall Fuller and Brandon Facyson who have both been out this spring due to injuries. Reynolds has climbed up the depth chart in impressive fashion and based on the reps he received on Saturday, Reynolds is definitely ahead of Edmunds and Payne, and is likely ahead of Stroman as well though that battle will continue to go on beyond the spring. Mook Reynolds has shown a lot of speed to stay up with just about any receiver while also showing a fairly high amount of awareness in the way he makes sure to keep his eyes on the ball. Reynolds also does a great job of making a quick recovery to a quick cut by an opposing wide receiver. Reynolds hasn't made any spectacular plays, but he has been consistent and reliable, which is exactly what Bud Foster and Torrian Gray have to enjoy seeing from the early enrollee. It would not be surprising if the Hokies put Reynolds with the other top secondary guys for Saturday's Spring Game to allow them some spring experience to build up communication. Reynolds should only continue to improve over the summer, and seems ready to be one of the top four cornerbacks whether Donovan Riley stays at rover or Chuck Clark moves to free safety. Reynolds has also shown this spring that he could be a quality starter in 2016 depending on how the roster looks before that season.
