Hokies Recruiting: Four-Star CB Wayne Davis Commits to Ohio State Over Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech Hokies are building a solid recruiting class with a good mix of players from Virginia and out-of-state headlined by QB Joshua Jackson from Michigan and WR Eric Kumah, both of which are rated as four-star recruits by ESPN. The Hokies haven't had their best year with recruiting in the state of Virginia, but have a few players that they are intensely pursuing. However, the Hokies have missed out on one of their top targets. https://twitter.com/Waynedavis1_/status/619192241584783360 Four-star cornerback Wayne Davis from Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes over the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Michigan Wolverines. The Buckeyes and Hokies have been in an intense recruiting battle for the four-star cornerback with Davis announcing his commitment on Twitter today. The Hokies had both Bryan Stinespring and Zohn Burden focused on recruiting Davis, but Ohio State's elite recruiter Larry Johnson was once again successful in getting a top Virginia recruit after getting four-star OT Matthew Burrell last cycle. Johnson also helped the Buckeyes get former Virginia Tech commit and three-star cornerback Kareem Felder. The Hokies currently have two cornerbacks committed in Myles Wolfolk and Troy Pride Jr. with both being intriguing three-star recruits with Pride having a four-star grade from 247 Sports. There is a chance that the Hokies could still get Davis depending on how things play out during the season, but that seems unlikely at this point. The loss of Davis puts a greater importance on the Hokies trying to get four-star DB Patrice Rene of Alexandria, Virginia, but they have some ground to make up on Rutgers and Ohio State who are trending as the early leaders. The Hokies are also trying to make a push to flip Tennessee commit and four-star cornerback Marquill Osborne. Missing out on Wayne Davis is a disappointing loss overall as Davis could have helped with some other top 757 players. The Hokies have had some struggles recently with the best of the best in the 757 and while the addition of Zohn Burden to the staff has helped, it wasn't enough this time. The Hokies still have a couple of important targets in the 757 that they need to get in athlete Grant Holloway and safety Keyvone Bruton, a teammate of Wayne Davis. The Hokies seem to be the favorites for both Holloway and Bruton right now, and getting both of those guys would give them some momentum in trying to get top 757 prospect for the Class of 2017 including athlete Devon Hunter. Wayne Davis is a disappointing loss, but the Hokies need to get some momentum in the 757 over the next several months before Class of 2017 recruiting kicks into full gear.
