Hokies Football: Kendall Fuller Named to the 2015 Jim Thorpe Award Watch List

With the weekend over, the college football award watch lists continue as the Hokies are headed for their highest number of players on these watch lists in a couple of years. This week is likely to be a calmer week for Hokies making these watch lists, but one star cornerback has made another watch list this year. Star junior cornerback Kendall Fuller was one of 42 defensive backs that were named to the 2015 Jim Thorpe Award Watch List. Fuller is arguably the best defensive back in college football so it was a mere formality that Fuller would be on this list for a second straight season. Fuller built on a Freshman All-American 2013 season with an even stronger 2014 season, having 54 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 2 interceptions, and 15 pass breakups. Fuller easily earned First Team All-ACC honors along with plenty of Second Team All-America honors. Fuller did this despite a broken wrist tha likely limited the number of interceptions he had. Fuller enters his junior season as the focal point of a Virginia Tech defense that has the talent and potential to be the best in all of college football. Fuller is already seen as one of the top 15 prospects for the 2016 NFL Draft, and will push to improve his already strong draft stock with an even better junior season. Kendall Fuller enters this season certain to be on just about every Preseason All-American team with Florida's Vernon Hargreaves as the other cornerback. Fuller, Hargreaves, and Florida State's Jalen Ramsey are seen as the top 3 defensive backs and the preseason favorites to win the Jim Thorpe Award. There has never been a Hokie to win the Jim Thorpe Award despite the talented defensive backs that have come through Blacksburg in the Frank Beamer era. However, Fuller definitely has the talent to be the Hokie that breaks and wins the most prestigious award for defensive backs in college football. Whether he ends up winning this award or not, Fuller has the potential to go down as the greatest cornerback to ever play for the Hokies. Fuller could also join DeAngelo Hall as another NFL Draft top 10 pick, and could be the highest picked Fuller among the four Fuller brothers that have played in Blacksburg. Kendall Fuller is one of the best defensive players in college football and has the talent to become the first Hokie to win the Jim Thorpe Award.
