Hokies Recruiting: Virginia Tech is in the Top 5 for Four-Star TE Jovani Haskins

The Virginia Tech Hokies have had some disappointing misses on some of their top targets in the recruiting trail including four-star CB Wayne Davis most recently. However, the Hokies are building a solid class led by QB Joshua Jackson, athlete Reggie Floyd, and WR Eric Kumah. The Hokies' recruiting class could become stronger in the next couple of weeks, especially with 4* WR Tino Ellis making his decision July 31st. Another top target for the Hokies named Virginia Tech in his top five. Four-star TE Jovani Haskins of Bergenfield High School in Bergenfield, New Jersey named Virginia Tech, Rutgers, West Virginia, Miami, and North Carolina. Haskins has been a rising name over the past few weeks in a state that has a solid group of recruits this year. Haskins is one of the Garden State's top recruits as Rivals and the 247 Sports Composite rank him as the ninth-best recruit while ESPN ranks him 12th among New Jersey recruits. Haskins is also ranked as the ninth best TE by Rivals, 13th best by ESPN, and 11th best by the 247 Sports Composite. The North Carolina Tar Heels are probably the biggest surprise on this list of five, but their success with Eric Ebron has definitely helped them with top tight ends. West Virginia's high-octane spread offense seems like a good fit for an athletic, receiving tight end like Haskins though being in the Big 12 and not playing games close to New Jersey could hurt. Miami seems like a sleeper as the lure of playing for the Hurricanes is still fairly strong despite the recent struggles for Miami. Al Golden was also previously the head coach at Temple and should have a good feel for the recruiting turf. The success of past tight ends including Greg Olson and Clive Walford most recently should help some also. Rutgers has the home turf advantage while also regularly playing major programs like Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, and Penn State. Head Coach Kyle Flood has been looking to keep many of the top recruits in New Jersey and Haskins is an important one to keep for this class. The success of Tyler Kroft could help along with the Big 10 having the most recent national champion. Virginia Tech is seen as the slight favorite by the 247 Sports Crystal Ball with 60% for the Hokies. The Hokies are looking to recruit better in the Garden State and Haskins is their top target at tight end. The Hokies have done a great job of developing tight ends in the last two seasons, and having two tight ends make the Mackey Award Watch List is significant. The Hokies and Rutgers are the favorites to get Jovani Haskins, but watch out for Miami, North Carolina, and West Virginia who all sneak up and surprise some recruiting analysts to get Haskins.
