Hokies Recruiting: Virginia Tech's Pursuit of Four-Star WR Grant Holloway

The Virginia Tech Hokies have had an up-and-down time on the recruiting trail with the Class of 2015, but have been able to get some quality recruits and plenty of help on the offensive side. This offensive boost is led by two ESPN 300 recruits, QB Joshua Jackson and WR Divine Deablo, along with ESPN four-star WRs Eric Kumah and Samuel Denmark. The Hokies have four wide receiver commits in Deablo, Kumah, Denmark, and Phillip Patterson so far, but may have a fifth on the way. Four-star wide receiver Grant Holloway of Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Virginia is one of Virginia Tech's top uncommitted targets. Holloway is not only a talented wide receiver, but also an elite track and field athlete that has received attention from every major track and field program. Holloway is likely to be a two-sport athlete in college doing track and field, and football though there is definitely a chance that he only does one. Recently, Holloway released his top four which included Virginia Tech, Georgia, Florida, and Oregon. The Hokies and Bulldogs have offered Holloway on football scholarships while the Gators and Ducks have offered Holloway on track and field scholarship. However, Holloway will almost certainly be able to play both sports at any of those four schools. Holloway is highly-rated by the football sites with ESPN ranking him as the 56th best WR, the 247 Sports Composite ranking him as the 69th best WR, and Rivals ranking him as the 45th best WR and 236th recruit. Within Virginia, Holloway is ranked as the sixth best by Rivals and ESPN, and 12th best by the 247 Sports Composite. Holloway is tremendously fasted and is listed as having ran a 4.26 40 yard dash which is extremely impressive. Holloway has also shown a lot of agility and explosiveness, showing a second gear to create separation from opposing cornerbacks. Holloway's numbers are not very good, but that is largely due to the fact that he plays in a high school offense with poor quarterback play along with a run-heavy focus. However, Holloway's numbers are still concerning despite the offense that he is playing in for his high school. The Hokies have been seen as the favorite to get Holloway with the offensive coaches and recruiting staff making a big push to get Holloway to come to Blacksburg. Zohn Burden's role in Holloway's recruitment seems likely to grow, and could be a significant difference maker in his recruitment. One thing that could hurt Virginia Tech is the fact that David Prince left the football team to focus on track and field after not being able to earn playing time for football. However, the Hokies also have J.C. Coleman who has success in both football, and track and field. Georgia and Florida both bring the SEC appeal with the Gators being a great track and field program to go with football prestige. The Bulldogs' more recent success could be a more important factor, but the Gators also seem ready to make a big push with a football scholarship likely also. Oregon is also a big threat to Virginia Tech with their very good run in the Pac-12 along with their track and field prestige. However, proximity to home is apparently a big factor for Holloway and that significantly hurts the chances of the Ducks and helps the Hokies a lot. Right now, Virginia Tech seems to be the slight favorite with Florida and Oregon in hot pursuit along with Georgia being the super sleeper. However, this recruitment seems likely to be one that could go all the way to National Signing Day.
