Hokies Football: C.J. Carroll Is a Favorite for Virginia Tech's #3 Wide Receiver Spot

The Virginia Tech Hokies do not have many position battles this fall with the main one still being at rover with Desmond Frye in control of that battle, and Adonis Alexander pushing the veteran safety. The Hokies may have a battle for the second starting offensive tackle brewing between Wade Hansen and Yosuah Nijman with Jonathan McLaughlin locked into a starting spot. The most competitive and wide open position battle is for the number 3 wide receiver spot with Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips easily locked into the starting wide receiver spots. The favorites have been Demitri Knowles, Kevin Asante, and Jaylen Bradshaw; but none of those three have really claimed the spot. However, one walk-on may be emerging as a favorite for the number 3 spot. C.J. Carroll redshirted last season after walking on the team in the fall, and has emerged as a frontrunner for the number 3 wide receiver spot. Carroll proved to be a hard-working player on the scout team last fall, and showed some potential to be a possible contender for the number 3 wide receiver spot in the spring. Despite this, Carroll still didn't seem like much of a contender to get playing time. In the Hokies' last open scrimmage to the public, Carroll received a mix of time with the first and second team offenses. Carroll proved in this game that he deserves the respect of being someone that is a serious contender to win the number three wide receiver spot. Carroll profiles as a slot wide receiver at a listed height of only 5'7'' but in the scrimmage, Carroll showed reliable hands unlike senior Kevin Asante who had multiple drops. Carroll also showed good speed to get some separation quickly on a slant or different quick pass route. More than that, Carroll proved to be a tough player as someone that could make the catch even when getting slammed to the ground. Carroll plays with a chip on his shoulder as someone that constantly is looking to prove he belongs on the field for one of the best teams in the ACC. C.J. Carroll has gone from afterthought to one of the top two contenders with Demitri Knowles for the number three wide receiver spot.
