Hokies Football: Virginia Tech Dominates Third Quarter, Beats Furman 42-3

The Virginia Tech Hokies returned to the field today looking to pick up their first win of the season after suffering an 18-point loss against #1 Ohio State. Brenden Motley was also making his first career start after Michael Brewer suffered a left broken collarbone. The good news for Hokie fans was the fact that there was no discomfort late in the game. Virginia Tech seemed to be in cruise control for much of the game, but that didn't make a difference as the Hokies comfortably beat Furman 42-3 and covered the spread of 33 points. The Hokies did this despite the fact that they definitely seemed to be on cruise control especially on defense, making giving up only 3 points even more impressive. The Hokies also avoided any significant injuries with Andrew Motuapuaka, Bucky Hodges, and J.C. Coleman all ready to return next week after leaving the game early this week. Brenden Motley took some time to get going against Furman with a 2-for-5 first quarter, but Motley started to take off in the second quarter. Then, Motley led the Hokies to a dominant third quarter with 21 points while being 9-for-10 passing during the quarter. Motley didn't return to the game after the third quarter, but had a very good game overall as he was 16-for-24 for 233 passing yards and 2 touchdowns along with having four carries for 38 yards and a touchdown. Motley showed that he has what it takes to be a productive quarterback, and Hokies should have plenty of confidence in him looking ahead to Purdue. Dwayne Lawson made his collegiate debut and wasn't the most effective through the air as he was 3-for-7 for 51 yards. However, Lawson was a tough runner and was quite productive throughout the game with nine carries for 51 rushing yards and his first career touchdown. Lawson showed a lot of promise today, and will likely be the starting quarterback for the 2016 season, but he still has some adjusting to do to the collegiate level. Travon McMillian showed impressive agility and explosiveness in this game with 6 carries for 98 rushing yards including a 63-yard carry. The Virginia Tech rushing attack was dominant today with not a single run for loss and an average of 7.3 yards per carry. Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips both had great games with Ford having five catches for 77 yards and 2 touchdown, while Phillips had 5 catches for 86 yards. Ford and Phillips are two of the hardest-working wide receivers in the country, and are helping the Hokies out a lot by allowing them to not go past them to find a wide receiver. On the defensive side, Chuck Clark has proven to be a great playmaker at the free safety spot with a great game. Clark had 13 total tackles on the day including nine in the first half. Clark has had the best first two games of any defensive back on Virginia Tech, and has definitely been an upgrade at free safety over Detrick Bonner. Andrew Motuapuaka built some confidence up and showed his instincts off with four tackles and an interception returned for the touchdown. Deon Clarke was consistently getting to the quarterback or stuffing the running back with 7 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Overall, today was a great game for the Hokies against a weak Furman team. With the way Brenden Motley is playing, expectations should be that the Hokies will be 4-1 when they play N.C. State, but they have to make sure they get the job done at Purdue and East Carolina, and at home in their ACC opener against Pittsburgh.
