Hokies Football: Three-Star WR Phillip Patterson Commits to Virginia Tech

Justin Fuente and Virginia Tech's new coaching staff have been busy on the recruiting trail since Fuente was hired eight days ago. Fuente and the Hokies have put somewhat of an emphasis on bringing in even more wide receivers despite the fact that Eric Kumah, Divine Deablo, and Samuel Denmark are already committed while also looking for immediate-impact JUCO WRs. Fuente and his staff also put a priority on players out of the 757, and tonight got their first commit from a former Virginia Tech commit in the 757. https://twitter.com/its_JB8/status/674022116979826689 Three-star wide receiver Phillip Patterson of Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia recommitted to the Virginia Tech Hokies tonight. Justin Fuente immediately wanted to put an emphasis on the 757 and the state of Virginia as a whole, and he has shown that with getting Patterson along with going to Richmond to watch Alabama four-star ILB commit Jaquan Yulee. Patterson becomes the Hokies' fourth wide receiver commit in a class that could end up with 5 to 7 wide receivers to try and fix the Hokies' major wide receiver depth issues. Bringing Patterson back into the fold is a strong pickup as Patterson is a very athletic, speedy receiver with a lot of potential. Patterson is also ranked as the 92nd best wide receiver by the 247 Sports Composite, 37th best athlete by ESPN, and 68th best wide receiver by 247 Sports' traditional rankings. Among Virginia recruits, ESPN and Rivals both have Patterson as the 17th best player in the Commonwealth while the 247 Sports Composite has him 16th, and 247 Sports' traditional rankings has him 11th. Phillip Patterson's decision to recommit to the Hokies was largely due to Justin Fuente and Holmon Wiggins even if Wiggins won't be his position coach. https://twitter.com/AlexKomaVT/status/674043813766283265 https://twitter.com/AlexKomaVT/status/674044029231890432 https://twitter.com/AlexKomaVT/status/674044217593831424 Fuente and Wiggins did a great job in going after Patterson very quickly upon arrival in Blacksburg, and are reaping the benefits now. Patterson is a much-welcomed addition to a recruiting class that is doing a great job of addressing the need to bring in depth at wide receiver behind Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips. Getting Patterson also should help Fuente and his staff immediately as they try to build up their connection in the talent-rich 757. Much of the Hokies' focus in the 757 now will likely turn to trying to flip Jaquan Yulee to Virginia Tech with help from his teammate and fellow linebacker Tavante Beckett who is already committed to the Hokies. Bayside High School also has an intriguing sophomore linebacker in Teradja Mitchell who has received tons of offers from programs like Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Florida State, Clemson, Tennessee, Georgia, Penn State, South Carolina, Miami, and North Carolina. Getting Patterson could end up being valuable for Fuente in his staff in recruiting another top 757 recruit over the next two years. Getting Phillip Patterson is a great start for Justin Fuente in the 757 as the Hokies look to begin taking back the state in recruiting.
