Hokies Basketball: Virginia Tech Beats Lamar 88-53

After an impressive win at Radford in which the game was only close for a few minutes during the second half, the Virginia Tech Hokies returned to action against the Lamar Cardinals led by former Hokie SF Tic Price. A few fans may have been concerned about the Hokies overlooking this game, but that was not an issue for Virginia Tech this afternoon. The Virginia Tech Hokies absolutely dominated the Lamar Cardinals on their way to an 88-53 victory at Cassell Coliseum. The Hokies likely would have won by more than 35 if it wasn't for the fact that the Hokies took out most of the main rotation for the final 3 minutes of the game. Zach LeDay was once again dominant in the paint on his way to his sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. LeDay also got out in transition and had a few buckets in the post off of some quick passes including a couple dunks that led to some of the loudest cheers from the Hokie faithful in attendance. Going forward, LeDay should continue to be a key piece in the middle, but he has help in Kerry Blackshear who had his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The emergence of Blackshear will continue to be a boost for the Hokies especially with Johnny Hamilton still suspended indefinitely. Once again, Justin Bibbs was on fire from the field with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting including a 5-for-9 game from beyond the arc. Bibbs continues to be one of the best three-point shooters in the nation, and is starting to become more assertive in the Virginia Tech offense which opposing teams will have to prepare for. Bibbs seems prone to have plenty of bigger games ahead as a key player that could have the Hokies headed for the NIT this season or maybe even higher. Jalen Hudson continues to keep his scoring run going with his third-straight game in double figures with 14 points, 13 of which came in the first half. During the first half, Hudson looked some like the player that had huge games last season against Duke and Miami in the ACC Tournament. If Hudson can become more consistent, the Hokies could be better than people expected to start the season. Seth Allen may not have played much point guard, but he was productive moving the ball with 7 assists to go with 10 points and 4 rebounds. Chris Clarke was once again aggressive and had another solid game with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Virginia Tech plays Grambling State next on Saturday in what is the last easy game on the schedule. After that, we will learn a lot more about how good the Hokies can be when they travel to Brooklyn to face St. Joseph's, and then return home after Christmas to take on what will likely be a ranked West Virginia team. For now, the Hokies have momentum and will do everything they can to keep it with tougher opponents looming.
