Hokies Football: Virginia Tech Hires Memphis DC Galen Scott as LBs Coach

After the recent hire of Brad Cornelsen as offensive coordinator, many were waiting to see who Justin Fuente would hire to the last available assistant spot on the defensive side of the ball. Yesterday, a report from Football Scoop emerged that Memphis defensive coordinator Galen Scott would be Virginia Tech's LBs coach. Today, Hokie fans received confirmation of the news broke yesterday. https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/684027784977514496 Galen Scott has been hired as the Hokies' linebackers coach replacing Cornell Brown who was previously the whip linebackers coach. One notable factor is that Scott will be the linebackers coach across the board with Bud Foster taking a more corporate role running the defense along with likely working more with the whip linebackers instead of the inside linebackers. Hiring Scott away from Memphis may not seem like that big of a move, but Scott likely had some opportunities to be a defensive coordinator at some Group of Five schools including Memphis possibly. Getting Scott to become the linebackers coach is a solid addition given his experience as a defensive coordinator at Memphis this past season. Scott and Fuente worked together before Memphis also as they were both at Illinois State from 2001 to 2006 with Scott staying through 2007 and being a defensive coordinator for the Redbirds in 2006 and 2007. While at Illinois State, Scott and Fuente were roommates with Scott introducing Fuente to his wife Jenny. Scott was also a defensive assistant for Tulsa for two years before joining the Memphis staff in 2010 as the linebackers coach before becoming the associate head coach in 2014 and defensive coordinator in 2015. Scott may join Charley Wiles on the recruiting trail in the Southeast as a Florida native that has already been recruiting the Southeast for Fuente. The addition of Scott adds another experienced defensive coach to a talented group with Foster, Charley Wiles, and Torrian Gray. Scott's addition also brings some continuity on both sides of the ball between Fuente and the new coaches, and the returning coaches and personnel with Zohn Burden being that on the offensive side. Galen Scott is a great final addition to the first coaching staff of the Justin Fuente era. However, don't be surprised to see a couple more announcements soon about quality control assistants that the Hokies have added recently at the end of Frank Beamer's tenure, and most major programs having them nowadays.
