Justin Fuente and the Virginia Tech Hokies are focused on finishing strong tomorrow with National Signing Day almost here, and a recruiting class that may go slightly over the current number of available scholarships. The Hokies' class has the potential to look vastly different by the end of National Signing Day than it did at the beginning of the week.
One thing of note now is that the Hokies will have on extra scholarship to use.
Offensive tackle Austin Clark has left the football program but has decided to stay enrolled at the university at this point. Of course, that could still change, but that would likely be a surprise at this point as it looks like Clark's football career has come to an end.
Clark was rated as a four-star recruit coming out of Lexington, Virginia and flipped his commitment last December from South Carolina to Virginia Tech before enrolling early in Blacksburg. However, Clark was always buried on the depth chart at offensive tackle and redshirted this past season.
Now, Clark has made the decision to leave the program and focus on his education in what makes him one of the biggest recruiting busts for the Hokies over the last few seasons. Expectations were high for Clark as one of the top offensive line recruits, based on the recruiting sites, to commit to the Hokies in the last decade.
Clark was never able to get going in Blacksburg, and could've been buried behind some of the incoming offensive linemen on the depth chart. Instead of staying in the program, Clark has decided to focus on his education in what is a sensible move with the demands that are put on a FBS football player.
Austin Clark will go down as one of the biggest recruiting busts in the last several years for the Hokies, but his move will give Justin Fuente an extra scholarship that could be valuable if the Hokies can close out this recruiting class in a strong way.
