Hokies Football: DBs Coach Torrian Gray Leaves Virginia Tech for Florida

The Virginia Tech Hokies had a disappointing National Signing Day with only two players deciding to join Virginia Tech's recruiting class today. However, the biggest news has nothing to do with recruiting. https://twitter.com/ThayerEvansSI/status/695021868152127488 DBs coach Torrian Gray is leaving Virginia Tech to take the same job at the University of Florida with an announcement most likely within the next week. The move for Gray is definitely a surprise that no one could have seen coming especially after a day where the Hokies failed to flip the commitments of multiple players. Gray took a slight pay cut to stay on the staff, but will definitely be getting a raise with this move to Florida along with the fact that he gets to return to his home state of Florida to coach for the Gators after coaching for the school he played his college football at. Gray has helped Virginia Tech become nationally recognized as DBU with the immense number of defensive backs that Gray has coached including Kam Chancellor, Brandon Flowers, Kyle Fuller, Kendall Fuller, Jayron Hosley, Macho Harris, Kyshoen Jarrett, Rashad Charmichael, Aaron Rouse, and Antone Exum; all of whom have been or are expected to be drafted. Gray was one of the better recruiters for the Hokies over the past few years and did a lot of damage on the trail all across the trail in the Southeast and Northern Virginia. Gray was listed as the primary recruiter by 247 Sports for many major commits including Tim Settle, Ryan Williams, and Brandon Facyson along with having an involvement recruiting five 2016 commits including Reggie Floyd, Khalil Ladler, Tyree Rodgers, Emmanuel Belmar, and Clay Dean. For the Hokies, Gray is a big loss after the tremendous job he did, but Virginia Tech still has Bud Foster, and Foster and Justin Fuente will make sure they get a guy who understands Virginia Tech's defense. No matter what, Gray is a significant loss after the tremendous job he has done over the past decade developing highly-regarded five-star and lowly offered three-stars. However, the move could mean that defensive roles slightly change with the possibility that maybe Charley Wiles shifts back to the full defensive line and Galen Scott works with the linebackers to allow Foster to work some with the linebacker and some with the defensive backs. Torrian Gray leaves the defensive backfield in great shape though with plenty of experience now led by Brandon Facyson, Chuck Clark, Terrell Edmunds, Adonis Alexander, Greg Stroman, and Mook Reynolds. The loss will be tough for Hokie fans, but that just shows how great of an impact Gray had on the Virginia Tech football program.
