Hokies Football: Three-Star Athlete Tyree Rodgers Commits to Virginia Tech

Just over a week ago, three-star athlete Tyree Rodgers of Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill, New Jersey was headed for Old Dominion with no offers from Virginia Tech or in-state Rutgers. Rodgers now is a poster-child for how recruiting can change quickly and a recruit can gain two last minute offers that change the course of his collegiate career. The good news for Hokie fans is that he'll be headed out of state and to the mountains. Rodgers made the decision to flip his commitment from Old Dominion to Virginia Tech after visiting the Hokies almost immediately after they decided to offer him. Rodgers had 10 offers from a group of schools that included Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Old Dominion, Temple, and N.C. State. So far, the Hokies have had a nightmare of a start with JaQuan Bailey choosing Iowa State, and Rick Wells, Tomon Fox, and Dominique Ross all sticking with their current commitments. Getting Rodgers gives the Hokies someone with multiple players still on the board including CB Coney Durr, LB Eron Carter, and Pittsburgh LB commit Chase Pine. Rodgers projects to be a cornerback for the Hokies and brings good size and athleticism at 6'1''. Rodgers also should be able to redshirt next season and develop at the position before beginning to get a significant amount of playing time with Brandon Facyson being the oldest as a redshirt junior. Rodgers is a good pickup for Justin Fuente and the Hokies who were able to get the job done quickly, and also beat out in-state Rutgers with a mid-week official visit that led to Rodgers cancelling his visit to Rutgers. Torrian Gray will be happy to get one of his top two targets with Durr still to announce his final decision later today. Virginia Tech's National Signing Day has gone quite poorly so far, but the commitment of Tyree Rodgers is a boost as the Hokies look to finish the day significantly better.
