Hokies Football: DE/OLB Tre Hubbard Will Walk On at Virginia Tech

Almost all of the focus today and the rest of the week will be about the scholarship players that sign with the Virginia Tech Hokies from the Class of 2016. However, Justin Fuente and the Hokies are also doing work on getting together a solid group of preferred walk-ons that the program sees as players that may just have the potential to make some sort of impact at the FBS level. Today, the Hokies got a walk-on addition that could end up having an impact on future recruiting classes. Tre Hubbard of Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia announced on Twitter that he would accept a preferred walk-on offer from Virginia Tech. Hubbard had received a lot of walk-on interest from schools, but the Hokies were able to get him to come to Blacksburg and walk on for the Hokies. Hubbard is listed by MaxPreps as having 15 sacks and 19 tackles for loss in 2014, and 8 sacks and 16 tackles for loss in 2015 which is quite impressive. Hubbard also looks like a borderline three-star recruit on tape though he definitely is someone that will need to add some bulk to have any chance in Blacksburg. It's surprising that a JMU or even an ODU didn't decide to offer him a full scholarship, but Hubbard is a player with some potential to possibly make an impact in the Blacksburg while also providing a little extra depth for the defensive end spot that only gained one on-scholarship player in early enrollee Jimmie Taylor. The more notable thing may be the fact that the Hokies were able to get Hubbard out of Ocean Lakes where three, 2017 four-star recruits played at this past season including RB Khalan Laborn, DT Eric Crosby, and WR Tahj Capehart. With Laborn being possibly Virginia Tech's biggest target after not getting a RB in 2016, having any connection is a huge bonus for VT. Tre Hubbard is a very good walk-on addition for the Hokies that is one of the best-looking walk-ons in recent memory coming out of high school. Yesterday may have been disappointing, but Hubbard is a pleasant headline name for the Hokies' walk-on class to go with the on-scholarship players headed to Blacksburg.
