Hokies Football: TE Kalvin Cline Will Transfer From Virginia Tech to Texas A&M

The Virginia Tech Hokies already faced some roster attrition on the offensive side of the ball with the transfer of RB Trey Edmunds to Maryland before the start of the spring semester along with the departure of OT Austin Clark from the team. Now, the Hokies have lost third offensive player and second due to transfer. VT Scoop is reporting that Kalvin Cline will finish out this semester at Virginia Tech and then transfer. This gives the Hokies only four scholarship tight ends this spring with Bucky Hodges, Xavier Burke, Chris Durkin, and Chris Cunningham. Cline was very likely to be the backup tight end behind Hodges this upcoming season, but has instead decided to transfer elsewhere with two years of eligibility remaining. Cline had 26 receptions for 321 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns in 2013, but injuries led to a medical redshirt in 2014. Cline was behind Hodges and Ryan Malleck on the depth chart last season and had only 3 receptions for 38 receiving yards this past season. Cline showed a lot of potential and definitely could have become a very productive tight end again for Virginia Tech, but should do well wherever he ends up next. With Cline's departure, the backup tight end spot is now wide open for battle between former QB Chris Durkin, and two redshirt freshmen Xavier Burke and Chris Cunningham. Durkin is the most intriguing name on the list after he started making the transition to tight end in the fall and is trying to follow the path of Bucky Hodges as a former QB and talented athlete to change positions. Burke may be the frontrunner as the more talented of the two redshirt freshmen tight ends along with being a little older due to spending a semester at Fork Union in the fall of 2014 before arriving at Virginia Tech. Cunningham is the biggest unknown of the group but the door is definitely open for him to get the backup TE job if he can earn it. In the short term, the loss of Cline shouldn't have too much of an impact as long as Bucky Hodges doesn't get hurt, but this does open a spot that at least one of the other three tight ends while the Hokies will need to get a tight end commitment in their Class of 2017. The loss of Kalvin Cline is disappointing, but it probably won't have too much of an impact unless Hodges gets hurt.

Update:

Kalvin Cline announced on Instagram that he will be transferring to Texas A&M. As a member of the Corps of Cadets, the transfer to the Aggies makes a lot of sense given their Cadet program, strong academic, and good football program. Cline will also be reunited with a former Virginia Tech assistant in Texas A&M WRs coach Aaron Moorehead.
