Hokies Football: Previewing Virginia Tech's Battle for Four-Star WR Tahj Capehart

Over the last couple of weeks, the Virginia Tech Hokies have sent out some new offers including a couple for wide receivers. Right now, it seems like the Hokies are looking to get around 3 to 4 wide receivers in their Class of 2017 and while there have been multiple new offers, one player from the 757 seems to be the top wide receiver target over everyone else. Four-star WR Tahj Capehart who played at Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia has emerged already as a priority target for the Hokies in a class that is loaded with talent from the 757. Capehart already has 16 offers from a multitude of schools including Virginia Tech, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Miami, Ohio State, South Carolina, N.C. State, Arizona State, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Penn State, and others. Nationally, Capehart is a majority four-star recruit with Rivals being the only ones that have him as a three-star recruit and listed as an athlete. Capehart is ranked as the 280th best recruit, 37th best WR, and 11th best recruit in Virginia by the 247 Sports Composite while ESPN ranks him as the 220th best recruit nationally, 34th best WR, and eighth best Virginia recruit. One thing that has helped the Hokies stay at the top of the list of contenders is that despite the staff change, Capehart's primary recruiter Zohn Burden is still on staff even if Burden will no longer be his position coach if he were to choose Virginia Tech. Capehart also plans on taking a visit with two other top 757 recruits who played at Ocean Lakes this past season, Khalan Laborn and Eric Crosby, this spring. One factor that can definitely help the Hokies is the opportunity wide receivers have had to come in and play immediately with Isaiah Ford being a starter for all of his freshman season, Cam Phillips having a big role immediately, and this year's group of receivers having an opportunity to play behind Ford and Phillips. Justin Fuente's high-octane offense also likely will have Capehart very intriguing knowing Fuente's need for talent and depth at wide receiver. One top challenger for Tahj Capehart will be Maryland who has built a strong relationship with Capehart thanks to their coaching change. The addition of former UVA WR Coach Chris Beatty has made the Terps a serious contender as Beatty and Capehart have a very good relationship that helped put the Cavaliers in a good position with Capehart before the coaching change. Tennessee also is an early contender for Capehart with WR coach and ace recruiter Zach Azzanni who has gotten the Volunteers plenty of talented wide receivers. Virginia has kept themselves in the hunt for Capehart and plans are for him to take a visit to Bronco Mendenhall and the Cavaliers sometime this spring. North Carolina's breakout season and passing offense makes the Tar Heels a potential sleeper especially with Larry Fedora now having some job security also. N.C. State could also be a sleeper to keep an eye on though their hopes may depend on getting Capehart teammate Eric Crosby who recently visited the Wolfpack though many see Tennessee as the favorite with the Hokies and Wolfpack currently being right behind the Volunteers. Right now, Tahj Capehart's recruitment does seem fairly wide open but Virginia Tech, Maryland, Tennessee, and Virginia seem to be some of the early favorites to get the top wide receiver from the 757. For Justin Fuente and his staff, Capehart will be a high priority for the Hokies' staff throughout recruiting for the Class of 2017.
