Hokies Basketball: Jalen Hudson Will Transfer Away From Virginia Tech

Yesterday, center Satchel Pierce announced he would transfer away from the Virginia Tech Hokies after two seasons in Blacksburg. The move wasn't that surprising given that Pierce had struggled to get playing time, and that the outlook for playing time in the future did not look good at all. However, the Hokies received a surprise today with another transfer decision. Sophomore guard Jalen Hudson has been granted a release from his scholarship and will transfer away from Virginia Tech. After averaging 6.9 points and 2.0 rebounds in 16.7 minutes per game as a freshman, Hudson averaged 8.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 20 minutes per game at a sophomore though Hudson started to lose some playing time after the return of Chris Clarke and the return to health of Ahmed Hill and Ty Outlaw likely would reduce his playing time even more. In the recent past, Buzz Williams has called Hudson his "most talented player" and it showed with some big games including 20+ point outbursts in wins over Princeton in the NIT and N.C. State along with the loss to Louisville. Hudson also had a huge game in the 2015 ACC Tournament that led the Hokies to a big win at the end of the first season of the Buzz Williams tenure. Hudson has always had a lot of talent, but his effort has been inconsistent and that has cost him playing time under Williams who demands 100% effort consistently. When Hudson did go into what Williams called "Tyrone" mode, the sophomore from Richmond was quite good, but his inconsistent effort prevented him from being one of the main options for the Hokies. Hudson will definitely receive a lot of interest from many recognizable programs as a very talented player that, when playing with lots of effort and energy, has the potential to be a very good scorer. However, Hudson never was able to put it together in Blacksburg and a change of scenery seems to be the best for him. For the Hokies, this opens up a second scholarship and the move means that the Hokies likely will look to bring in at least one player that can play immediately. Delaware transfer PG Kory Holden has been a top target for the Hokies, but Holden will have to sit out a year and Williams will want to add more depth in another wing player or a forward. Jalen Hudson is a surprising loss but a change of scenery seems the best while the Hokies now have another scholarship they can use on a transfer or a recruit.
