Hokies Football: Three-Star ATH/TE Dalton Keene Commits to Virginia Tech

Over the last few days, the Virginia Tech Hokies have started to build some recruiting momentum leading into the Spring Game with four-star DT Eric Crosby including the Hokies in his final top two followed by top 2016 punter Brandon Nickle and 2017 three-star athlete Caleb Farley committing to the Hokies. Now, the Virginia Tech Class of 2017 has gotten a little bigger with what may also be the Hokies' first commit from a state it has rarely recruited. Three-star athlete Dalton Keene of Chatfield High School in Littleton, Colorado committed to the Virginia Tech Hokies after visiting the Nebraska Cornhuskers this past weekend. In addition to offers from the Hokies and Huskers, Keene also has offers from Colorado, Missouri, Syracuse, Iowa State, and Colorado State. Keene is ranked as a three-star recruit by both the 247 Sports Composite and Rivals while 247 Sports has him as a four-star recruit and the 163rd best player in the nation. Keene is also ranked as the 35th best athlete and fourth best Colorado recruit by the 247 Sports Composite while the traditional rankings for 247 Sports has him as the 14th best athlete and third best recruit from the state of Colorado. The importance of relationships in recruiting showed here with the prior relationship between Charley Wiles and Keene's father from their time as roommates at Murray State having a significant impact. Keene has also known Wiles and Bud Foster from a young age, and the chance to go play at a place where two of his father's good friends coached clearly was too much to pass up. For the Hokies, Wiles has been on a roll with recruiting in the Class of 2017 with three of the seven commits being guys he was the primary recruiter for in Keene, Hendon Hooker, and Aundre Kearney along with being the secondary recruiter for Tyjuan Garbutt. Wiles has received some criticism in the past for recruiting but this impressive string of recruiting with the improved support systems in place should end that criticism. Keene projects to play tight end for the Hokies with TEs coach James Shibest also playing a role in the recruitment of Keene. Keene has a very intriguing combination of athleticism and size that has made him a top priority for the staff after not getting a single tight end commit in the previous class. Dalton Keene is the latest addition to a Virginia Tech Class of 2017 that has momentum ahead of a big weekend with four-star DT Eric Crosby announcing Friday and the Spring Game happening Saturday with rumors of potentially 60-70 recruits visiting Blacksburg for the game.
