Hokies Basketball: 2017 Four-Star SG Nickeil Alexander-Walker Commits to Virginia Tech

Over the past few weeks, Buzz Williams and the Virginia Tech Hokies have been focused primarily on possible transfer and 2016 recruits that could fill the two scholarship roster spots that opened up due to the decisions to transfer from Jalen Hudson and Satchel Pierce. However, that also hasn't stopped the Hokies from going after some of their top targets in the Class of 2017. Today, the Hokies got their first 2017 commit. Canadian four-star shooting guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker of Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee committed to Virginia Tech this evening. Alexander-Walker has offers from multiple top programs beyond the Hokies including Maryland, USC, Baylor, Cincinnati, Auburn, Miami, Providence, UNLV, and Illinois. Alexander-Walker is ranked as the 62nd best recruit and 14th best SG by the 247 Sports Composite while 247 Sports ranks him as the 78th best 2017 recruit and 16th best SG. The Hokies made their closing move this past week as Alexander-Walker visited the Hokies only a few days ago right after he took a visit to Maryland. Buzz Williams made a big move on the recruiting trail and has gained a very talented player in Alexander-Walker who definitely has the potential to make an early impact for the Hokies. The fact that Williams was also able to beat out Maryland is a great sign of the progress that has been made in Blacksburg along with the respect that Williams has among recruits. Being in the ACC after the ACC had 6 of the Sweet 16, 4 Elite Eight teams, 2 Final Four teams, and a team in the National Championship can't hurt either. Alexander-Walker gives the Hokies a much-needed wing for the future with the Hokies unlikely to add a new freshman wing in the class that includes Khadim Sy. Alexander-Walker also has the versatility to run the point and has the length to develop into a very good perimeter defender for the Hokies. Nickeil Alexander-Walker is a strong start for the Hokies on the recruiting trail and while he is a 2017 guy, he gives them momentum as they make their final push for Liberty transfer big man Evan Maxwell and newly reclassified 2016 four-star PG Markell Johnson. Nickeil Alexander-Walker is a great addition to a 2017 Virginia Tech recruiting class that has a great foundation now along with momentum for filling the current open spots on the roster. Buzz Williams gets its done again on the recruiting trail in what is another sign of the quick progress that's been made in Blacksburg under Buzz.
