Hokies Women's Lacrosse: Virginia Tech Hires Winthrop's John Sung as Next Head Coach

For the past couple of weeks, Whit Babcock and the Virginia Tech Hokies have been doing a national coaching search looking for their next head coach of the women's lacrosse program to basically rebuild the team from scratch after lots of struggles the past few seasons. Babcock didn't take long looking and getting a new head coach, and it looks like Babcock has made another great hire. https://twitter.com/VT_Lax/status/736188418963701760 Winthrop head coach John Sung was hired to replace Megan Burker as the Hokies' head coach officially today. Sung has a national reputation as a respectable lacrosse coach and currently chairs the NCAA Division I Lacrosse Committee along with being on the U.S. Lacrosse Convention Education Committee. Sung started out coaching at the high school level after being a two-year captain of the men's lacrosse team at Oakland University in 1997 and 1998. Sung was an assistant at the University of Michigan for their women's lacrosse program, helping them build towards becoming a varsity sport in Ann Arbor. Sung's first head coaching job came at Division III Adrian College where he started the program at and went 46-19 over four seasons at Adrian College. Sung also led Adrian College to a Division III NCAA Tournament appearance in his final season in 2011. Sung made the jump to the Division I level at Winthrop where he started his second varsity women's lacrosse program and quickly built Winthrop into one of the best programs from a smaller conference in the country. Sung's Winthrop team didn't start competing till 2013 but in his four years at Winthrop, Sung went 54-26 with 2 NCAA Tournament appearances (2015,2016), 2 Big South Tournament titles (2015,2016), and 1 Big South regular season title (2015). Sung has an impressive reputation for building programs from scratch but in Blacksburg, he'll have the chance to build a program with some pieces already in place. Sung reportedly also has very strong connections to coaches in the loaded DMV region that will help a lot on the recruiting trail along with helping to rebuild the Virginia Tech program. Sung will be faced with a massive rebuilding job in the toughest conference for women's lacrosse in America, but Sung has proven twice that he can build a program out of nothing into a team that can be competitive and make the NCAA Tournament. John Sung is the latest great hire by Whit Babcock and the Hokies as Virginia Tech's athletic program is putting together more pieces to have its most successful run in school history.
