Hokies Basketball: Virginia Tech Hires UCF Assistant Christian Webster, Promote Two Assistants

Since the departure of Isaac Chew to Texas A&M, many have been wondering who Buzz Williams might hire to replace Chew on the bench. After a few weeks, it became clear that his addition would not be the top assistant and that remaining assistants Steve Roccaforte and Jamie McNeilly were likely to receive a promotion. Now, the Hokies have hired their replacement for Chew. https://twitter.com/VT_MBBall/status/752567828306333698 UCF assistant Christian Webster was announced as Virginia Tech's newest assistant with Steve Roccaforte being promoted to the top assistant spot with Jame McNeilly being the number 2 assistant under Williams. Webster is a Washington D.C. native with the move to Blacksburg being somewhat of a homecoming after playing and coaching at Harvard before UCF, and now moving within five hours of his hometown. Webster brings some varied coaching experience already despite being in his mid-twenties as he spent two years at Harvard and this past season at UCF. Webster also has the most career victories of any player in Harvard basketball history and helped lead the Crimson to one of their most successful runs under Tommy Amaker. The fact that Webster is a Washington D.C. native should be useful in recruiting as it gives the Hokies someone that can relate better to recruits up in the Washington D.C. area along with his youth making him more relatable on the trail. The fact that Harvard head coach Tommy Amaker brought Webster on his coaching staff right after he finished his collegiate career is quite a statement about his leadership. Promoting Roccafore and McNeilly allows the Hokies to take a chance on a young assistant like Webster knowing they have two well-proven assistants on the staff that Buzz Williams trusts. The addition of Christian Webster is a smart move for the Hokies who seemed to have gotten one of the top young, rising assistants in college basketball.
