Hokies Football: QB Dwayne Lawson Has Left the Virginia Tech Football Team

When the Virginia Tech Hokies gained a commitment from four-star QB Dwayne Lawson in the Class of 2015, many saw big things ahead for Lawson with many comparing Lawson to Tyrod Taylor or even Michael Vick. Lawson had impressive athleticism and arm strength that made him a very intriguing prospect that had many Hokie fans believing he could be the next great Virginia Tech quarterback. However, that will never come to fruition in Blacksburg. https://twitter.com/techlunchpaild/status/761599293329289216 Evan Watkins of VT Scoop broke the news this afternoon that Dwayne Lawson has left the Virginia Tech football program. Norm Wood of the Daily Press also had some more insight on part of the reason why Lawson may be gone from the program. https://twitter.com/normwood/status/761605433089982464 https://twitter.com/normwood/status/761609094105030656 This is definitely a disappointing rumor to say the least and if this is true, a stop at the junior college is almost certain to be next for Lawson. There have been rumors and speculation that a transfer could be coming from Lawson especially since a big reason why he chose the Hokies was the belief that he could get playing time here sooner than he could sitting behind Brad Kaaya at Miami. Lawson also saw the man who recruited him here, Scot Loeffler, leave for Boston College after not being retained by Justin Fuente. Lawson was not in the picture for the starting job this year, and freshman QB Josh Jackson had a strong spring that led him to yesterday taking reps with the fourth team as reported by Jason Stamm of Scout. Lawson also has had issues learning the playbook that have prevented him from realizing his full potential. The combination of these issues has led to an unsurprising departure that many speculated could happen. The good news for the Hokies is that they have three solid on-scholarship quarterbacks in Jerod Evans, Brenden Motley, and Josh Jackson while having Hendon Hooker arriving next year, DeJuan Ellis the year after that, and young walk-on Jack Click steadily improving. However, this is undoubtedly disappointing that Dwayne Lawson couldn't learn the playbook and develop into the top-line starter that his athleticism and arm talent suggests that he still can become. The JUCO level is likely next for Lawson and he must get stuff together off-the-field and improve his football IQ if he wants to develop into a productive QB. If not, Lawson's future will not be at a major program. Update: Justin Fuente and Virginia Tech football released a statement regarding the transfer of Dwayne Lawson. https://twitter.com/VT_Football/status/761623369229996032 Lawson is headed to Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas which has produced some good JUCO talents and is a smart choice for Lawson to try to focus on developing his game and becoming the player that he has the potential to be.
